Swimming Lessons at Tring Sports Centre
Tring Sports Centre is a great environment in which our child can learn to swim. We follow the Swim England learn to swim framework to deliver the best lessons possible, with a maximum of 6 children per class. Our teachers are dedicated to making the lessons fun, whilst teaching this valuable life skill. Specialised for ages 3+, our classes begin at pre-school and run up to Stage 7.
Due to the huge demand for swimming lessons, please note our waiting list is currently closed, while we get the existing list through the programme.
As soon as we are able to re-open the list we will advise here.

Pre School and Stage 1
Pre school: If your child is 3-4 years old and hasn’t swum before, then this is the stage for them. It will teach confidence and independence.
Stage 1: For children 4 years + who have never been swimming before and for those who still need floats and teachers’ help. It will teach them to be confident in and around water and how to kick without the use of a float.
Stage 2 and Stage 3
Stage 2: This level will help develop water confidence, leg kick and introduce the use of their arms on their front and back. At then end of this stage they will be able to swim five metres on both their front and their back using arms and legs.
Stage 3: Here, they’ll be taught towards the end goal of being able to swim unaided for 10 metres on both their front and back. They’ll be supported on this journey by being introduced to aquatic breathing and different types of aquatic mobility.
Stage 4 and Stage 5
Stage 4: Here your child some of the basic swimming techniques for all four strokes, including treading water and swimming underwater in the deep end. Your child will be working towards being able to swim 20 metres unaided on their front and back.
Stage 5: As well as working towards being able to swim 25 metres on their front and back, this stage will begin to develop your child’s stroke technique to a higher standard, making them even more confident in the water.
Stage 6 and Stage 7
Stage 6: During this stage, your child will learn to swim 100 metres backstroke and front crawl as well as beginning to get a greater understanding of breaststroke and butterfly – in which your child will also have to demonstrate competence in order to attain this level of accreditation.
Stage 7: At this stage of our children’s swimming lessons programme, we will start introducing your child to touch turns, whilst improving their ability in butterfly and increasing the distance they can swim to 200 metres.
